The BEST green smoothie recipe! It's chock-full of healthy ingredients like fresh spinach, but you'd never guess it from the sweet, delicious taste.
This healthy green smoothie is my latest breakfast obsession. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you know that I go in and out of breakfast kicks. I’ll eat one type of food every morning for a few weeks before moving on to the next phase. I’ve cycled through muffins, eggs, overnight oats, hot oatmeal, porridge, and more, but I have to say, this green smoothie kick might just stick around. I love starting my day knowing that I’ve already had multiple servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and this particular green smoothie is really delicious. It’s healthy, creamy, and made with just 6 ingredients. I’ll have it on repeat for the next few weeks (at least!), and I hope that you will too.
Best Green Smoothie Recipe Ingredients
Even though this green smoothie looks incredibly healthy (and it is – there are lots of leafy greens in there!), what I love most about it is its creamy texture and sweet, fresh flavor. Here’s what makes it so darn good:
- Frozen banana makes it thick and creamy. Plus, it adds a little sweetness and plenty of potassium.
- Lots of spinach gives this smoothie its vibrant color and a host of nutrients. Don’t worry – you can’t taste it!
- Fresh mint gives it a light, fresh flavor.
- Almond butter makes it creamy, satisfying, and rich with healthy fats.
- Vanilla extract adds yummy depth of flavor.
- Ice cubes make it cool and refreshing.
- And almond milk gets the blender going and perfects the creamy texture. If you don’t have almond milk on hand, another plant-based milk like oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk would be great here too.

Green Smoothie Recipe Variations
I love this green smoothie recipe as written, but feel free to play with it! Swap in what’s in season or what you have on hand. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Mix up the greens. Replace the spinach with a small handful of kale.
- Swap the herbs. Try using cilantro, parsley, basil, or arugula instead of mint. Or if you prefer, skip the herbs altogether!
- Add more fruit. Frozen fruits like frozen mango, strawberries, or blueberries would all taste good here. Or if you want to make a green smoothie that tastes sweeter, blend in one or two Medjool dates!
- Up the protein. Blend in your favorite protein powder or a scoop of Greek yogurt.
- Give it an extra flavor boost. Grate in fresh ginger or lemon zest, or add a squeeze of lemon juice or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Use a different nut butter. Don’t like almond butter? Use cashew butter instead. You could also replace the nut butter and with a scoop of hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flaxseed.
Let me know what variations you try!

Can I use my nutribullet to make these smoothies? I bought it on clearance awhile back at Walmart with the intents to start making smoothies for breakfast and start trying to eat healthier. I also am not the biggest on veggies so this would help! These shakes sound amazing just wanna make sure I can use my nutribullet as I don’t have a regular blender. And do you buy frozen fruits or just freeze fresh fruits. Thank you!
Hi Marissa, yes! A Nutribullet would definitely work for these smoothies. We buy most fruits frozen for smoothies, but the orange segments in this recipe are hard to find frozen, so we buy them fresh and freeze them ourselves.
I rarely leave comments also but agree this is a really light and refreshing smoothie. I added some protein powder post gym and love it! Thank You!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I rarely leave comments on blogs, but I needed to for this one. This smoothie has become my obsession. it is SO GOOD. It is my favorite smoothie recipe, and it’s been a daily smoothie in my house for weeks now. Thank you for sharing!!
Can you add vanilla protein powder?
Yep – I think that would be great here (I like the ALOHA brand vanilla protein if you don’t have a favorite already)
Do you think it might be possible to use dried mint for this? If so, how much?
OH MY GOSH. This is an awesome idea! I love an annual shamrock shake, such a fun treat, but am totally unattracted to the dairy, loads of sugar, and artificial chemicals in them. So excited to make this healthy treat 🙂 Thanks!
I love drinking minty green shake in winter. It is very good for the body. Moreover I like the flavor of mint it is very nice. This is very nice sharing keep share more shake recipes.
It sounds so deliciously tasty! I haven’t made smoothies in ages and I think it’s definitely more welcomed in warmer seasons 🙂
Looks yummy but healthy… I will be definitely making these on paddy’s day morning!
I made this last night and absolutely loved it. My husband, who was a bit skeptical, is a total convert to drinking your spinach. So, so good!
Ha, I love hearing that!!
I totally adore cashew milk. It’s so incredibly creamy. I wish I had one of these shamrock shakes right now!
Hi,
I really love your blog, photos and green recipes. Everything looks Halthy and tasety. Greetings from Croatia from another food bloger 🙂
Perfect timing! My husband and I drove by McDonalds and I jokingly commented about how excited I was for a Shamrock Shake. He was like what is that? And I was like…whoa I don’t actually know. Green flavor? McDonalds and Shamrock Shake = Non-Food to us (and I hope, one day, everyone!!!) ….either way, YOUR smoothy looks so delicious and festive, I think we’ll have to try it! Thank you for creating this so we can enjoy a healthy, creamy, green ‘shake’ for St. Patty’s! – Charlie, http://www.lemonbutterlove.com
Hmm… this looks really tasty and the only reason I’m saying “hmm” is because I can definitely make this when my husband’s not looking and I can kind of serve it to him without telling him what it is. I want him to get his nutrients from somewhere (because he’s not too big on veggies)! I for one, am really excited to taste this.

How completely fun and festive are these! I’m so going to have to try them!
I love cashew milk! Even better with almonds. I was never a fan of shamrock shakes, your healthy option is much better.
I’ve seen many of these green smoothies pass today – but none with natural colouring. Love that you made it healthier! I’ve ordered my nut milk bag today so hopefully I’ll be able to try this with home made cashew milk 🙂
Love that you made it healthy!! Now I have something to help combat trips to McDonalds, haha!
